Starting in 2002 Stephen F. Austin State University and 57 independent school districts established the Texas Middle and Secondary Mathematics Project as an effort to positively impact student achievement in mathematics through better teacher preparation.
The TxMSMP has worked to improve the capacity of mathematics teachers in grades 4-12 to impact student performance within the partner districts by:
-increasing the number of qualified/certified mathematics teachers;
-preparing teachers to become Master Mathematics teachers, providing leadership and mentoring for others;
-increasing student mathematics performance through classroom experiences and summer institutes.
As of the 2009, SFASU has graduated 90+ highly qualified mathematics teachers with master's degrees. Extending the TxMSMP impact, NSF approved supplementary funding to develop leadership capacity utilizing TxMSMP graduates and to study the effectiveness of teacher-leaders within high needs districts. Participants are trained in differentiated instruction, development/delivery of quality pd, and materials used in outreach efforts via SFASU STEM Research and Learning Center.
